Guan
first
appeared
on
the
American
stage
in
1978
as
part
of
the
China
Performing
Arts
Troupe,
the
first
performing
arts
tour
from
mainland
China
to
the
U.S.
after
relations
between
the
two
countries
were
normalized.
Performances
on
this
historic
tour
included
Lincoln
Center
and
the
Kennedy
Center
and
were
presented
on
national
television
in
a
PBS
production,
From
China
to
US.
Mr.
Guan
made
his
Broadway
debut
in
1988
as
an
actor
and
choreographer
in
the
Tony
award–winning
M.
Butterfly,
written
by
David
Henry
Hwang
and
directed
by
John
Dexter,
and
on
its
national
and
international
tours.
Additionally,
he
choreographed
Warner
Brothers'
feature
film,
M.
Butterfly,
directed
by
David
Cronenberg
and
starring
Jeremy
Irons
and
John
Lone.
Other
Broadway
credits
include
movement
consultant
to
Tony-nominated
Golden
Child
,
written
by
David
Henry
Hwang
and
directed
by
James
Lapine.
Mr.
Guan
choreographed
and
appeared
in
the
world
premiere
of
the
one-act
opera,
The
Silver
River,
written
by
David
Henry
Hwang,
composed
by
Bright
Sheng
and
directed
by
Lisa
Peterson,
at
the
Santa
Fe
Chamber
Music
Festival
in
1997.
In
1998,
he
choreographed
the
world
premiere
of
Red,
written
by
Chay
Yew
and
directed
by
Lisa
Peterson,
at
Seattle's
Intiman
Theater,
and
Carry
the
Tiger
to
the
Mountain,
written
by
Charlene
Lee
and
commissioned
by
the
Contemporary
American
Theater
Festival.
In
1999,
Mr.
Guan
choreographed
and
cast
Red,
directed
by
David
Petrarca,
at
Long
Wharf
Theatre
in
New
Haven,
Connecticut
and
at
the
Manhattan
Theatre
Club.
In
1999
and
2000,
Mr.
Guan
worked
with
Debbie
Allen
assisting
in
the
choreography
of
Soul
Possessed
and
Dreams,
two
shows
written,
choreographed
and
directed
by
Ms.
Allen
and
performed
at
the
Kennedy
Center
in
Washington,
D.C.
He
has
continued
his
collaboration
with
Ms.
Allen,
most
notably
as
associate
choreographer
of
a
live,
globally-broadcast
Chinese
martial-arts
dance
performance
celebrating
the
film
Crouching
Tiger,
Hidden
Dragon
for
the
73rd
Annual
Academy
Awards,
March
25,
2001.
Mr.
Guan
worked
with
Robert
Longbottom
as
Chinese
Opera
Consultant
and
was
responsible
for
Warrior
Dance
Staging
in
the
Broadway
production
of
Flower
Drum
Song
which
opened
in
October
2002
at
the
Virginia
Theater
following
its
acclaimed
Los
Angeles
production
at
the
Mark
Taper
Forum
in
2001.
Mr.
Guan
was
the
Chinese
Movement
Choreographer
for
Making
Tracks
at
the
Village
Theatre
in
Seattle
in
March
2002.
Later
that
year
in
October
he
choreographed
two
pieces
for
the Concert of
Excellence
at
Carnegie
Hall
presented
by
Second Generatio .and Last of the Suns at Ma-Yi Theater Company .Red at
Wilma Theater 2003.
In
addition,
Mr.
Guan
choreographed
a
television
commercial
for
The
Coca-Cola
Company,
Red
Dragon,
and
appears
in
print
and
billboard
advertising
for
AT&T.
